I just helped a girl out of a panic attack after she was in a car accident. If you have anxiety or panic attacks or know someone who does read this and use it when you need to. I’ve suffered from panic attacks most of my life and this method has really helped me.
- Acknowledge FIVE things you can see. Can be a blade of grass, a pen, a freckle on someone’s face, anything but find things to look at.
- Acknowledge FOUR things you can touch. The hem of your shirt, the paper on your desk, etc.
- Acknowledge THREE things you can hear. In her case I tried to not get her to focus on the car noises as that could make the panic attack worse, but the sound of birds and the wind.
- Acknowledge TWO things you can smell. The rain on the pavement or the smell of a perfume.
- Acknowledge ONE thing you can taste. For me it’s just usually my own saliva but if you can get them something to drink this also helps.
Most importantly make sure they’re taking calming breaths. In for a 2-3 count and out for a 2-3 count.
